Shuttle Atlantis

Shuttle Atlantis
From Jim & Sherry McDaniel: As the last Space Shuttle Flight nears its completion, I wanted to share with you a an experience we had with the Space Shuttle Atlantis. . On a Sunday afternoon in March 2001, I was in our back yard in our new home at Regatta Bay. I was taking photos of some flowers. Off in the distance I heard an unfamiliar sound, but knew it had to be some type of large plane approaching. As I looked toward the east, I saw the image shown below. I had my digital camera and had one chance to get a photo. My research determined this Shuttle had landed at Edwards AFB due to the weather not suitable for a landing at Cape Canaveral. They were in flight from Edwards AFB to Cape Canaveral when some unexpected winds forced it to make an unscheduled stop at Elgin AFB. I was able to obtain this one photo. In searching the internet, I found Atlantis had also landed at Eglin AFB in 1990. Thought you might enjoy our connection with the last US Space Shuttle to the International Space Station.

Red Bay Cafe

Red Bay Cafe
The Red Bay Cafe on State Road 81
The community-owned Red Bay Cafe/Grocery Store, located on State Road 81, in the middle of nowhere in Walton Country. Its a super place for home cooking and local honey and preserves. This is not a place many in Avalon Beach have been to but if you have time its a real treat.
